Oceanic Global Short Film Festival 2025

Oceanic Global's annual festival celebrating ocean storytelling through short films that inspire collective action and environmental awareness.

About the Festival

The Oceanic Global Short Film Festival launched in 2020 with the aim of uplifting environmental and ocean storytelling from around the world. Oceanic Global Hubs hosted a third edition of the Short Film Festival premiering in New York City and London during Earth Month in April 2025, as well as at Satellite Screening Events around the world.

Building on the success of past events, this year’s programming broadened our festival’s impact through multiple formats to enhance environmental storytelling & engage diverse audiences globally.
Leading up to the 2025 Festival, events brought together a panel of critically acclaimed judges to review submissions and select a set of the winning films for this year’s edition.

A Dragon Story

Directed by: Dean Spraakman

An intimate portrait takes the viewer on a journey showcasing the life and reproduction cycle of the Leafy Sea Dragon.

Peixinho

Directed by: Kaushiik Subramaniam

An inspiring story of resilience and transformation in a remote Mozambican village, where one man’s mission to teach children to swim and promote ocean safety sparks hope for the community. As he challenges outdated fishing practices and advocates for sustainable solutions, he bridges generations, redefining what it means to live in harmony with the sea.

Develop

Directed by:  Lidewij Hartog

Director of Photography: Nino Kennis

A short documentary exploring the journey of Ydwer van der Heide, a surf photographer redefining his connection to the ocean after a life-changing accident left him paralyzed from the chest down. Through relationships, the body, and photography, the film captures his resilience and evolving relationship with water, a vital part of his identity.

The Cosmos Beneath

Directed by: Lucas Lengagne

A contemplative short film that draws a poetic parallel between the vastness of the ocean and the cosmos, capturing the shared sense of wonder, mystery, and humility they inspire. Through mesmerizing imagery, the film pays tribute to the deep connection between looking up at the stars and diving beneath the waves, revealing nature’s ancient and awe-inspiring majesty.

HAAGUA

Directed by: Marc Antony Chavez & Octavio Coutiño Aceves

An Indigenous surf film rooted in cultural resurgence, HAAGUA explores the sacred relationship between Great Great-Grandmother Ocean and her great-grandchildren. Through surfing as both ancestral memory and spiritual practice, the film reveals a powerful story of regeneration, reconnection, and resistance along the West Coast.

Directed by Indigenous filmmakers Marc Antony Chavez and Octavio Coutiño Aceves, and produced by Native Like Water, HAAGUA weaves together striking coastal imagery with lived stories of reclamation. It highlights how nature’s law and Indigenous ways of life are re-emerging after centuries of disruption.

Currently on the international film festival circuit and community screenings, HAAGUA will be officially released to the public on streaming platforms in 2026.

London Film Screening

On Sunday, April 20, 2025, Oceanic Global partnered with with Ocean Culture LifeSpace for a Better World and Space for Art Foundation to host a satellite screening of the winners of the 2025 Oceanic Global Short Film Festival and a panel discussion at “Ocean for Space: Ocean Stories” at Piccadilly Lights in London. This event was free and open to the public!

This Earth Day, Oceanic Global was proud to join the Sea & Space Event as an integrated partner —bringing the Wonders of the Ocean to the heart of London at the iconic Piccadilly Lights. Together with our partners in purpose, we supported a platform that bridged sea and space, spotlighting the stories and solutions shaping the future of our Blue Planet.

As part of our contributions, we featured the winning films from Oceanic Global’s Short Film Festival 2025, presenting a powerful selection of ocean-focused films that highlighted the beauty, urgency, and resilience of our interconnected world. Additionally, we screened our collaborative film with Sounds of the Ocean, an immersive, meditative piece that merges ocean imagery, sound healing, and educational storytelling that celebrated the beauty of our living Ocean.

It was an incredible Earth Day celebration that elevated Ocean stories, and helped carry this movement forward. Together, we are sustaining what sustains us.
