Mangrove Restoration & Education in Benin, Africa

Oceanic Global partnered with local non-profit Grabe-Benin to help restore mangroves and strengthen community-led conservation in Benin, Africa.

Project Overview

Mangroves are among the most effective natural carbon sinks and play a vital role in protecting coastal communities from erosion, extreme weather, and biodiversity loss. In Benin, Africa mangrove ecosystems hold deep ecological, economic, and socio-cultural importance. Although mangroves are legally protected, enforcement and on-the-ground implementation remain limited, leaving many ecosystems vulnerable to degradation.

In response, Oceanic Global partnered with local nonprofit GRABE-BENIN through its Community Grants Program to support community-led mangrove restoration and conservation in southern Benin. From 2023–2025, this initiative worked to restore degraded coastal ecosystems while strengthening local stewardship through environmental education, scientific research, and community engagement.

This project was made possible through the generous support of Sven and Kristin Lindblad through The Wanderlust Fund.

Mangrove Reforestation & Rehabilitation

Over 6,000 mangrove and raphia palm seedlings were planted using locally adapted species, helping to restore degraded habitats and improve ecosystem resilience. Regular monitoring and maintenance was conducted where site accessibility allowed.

Environmental Education & Community Awareness

Through weekly environmental classes and awareness campaigns, students and community members deepened their understanding of mangrove ecosystems, climate resilience, and sustainable practices. Awareness campaigns reached an estimated 2,000+ community members in Gogotinkponmin.

Biodiversity Studying & Monitoring

Comprehensive scientific studies conducted across both project sites identified 167 plant species, including rare and threatened species, and helped inform future conservation priorities.

Nature Camp & Intergenerational Dialogue

A multi-day nature camp help in July 2025 brought together youth, elders, and community members to share knowledge, build environmental awareness, and strengthen connections to the land. 80% of participants reported behavior changes related to environmental practices.
