Blue Standard Launch in Barbados

March 16, 2019: Oceanic Global partnered with local social enterprise, Sustainable Caribbean, to launch the TOS: Barbados Edition (now Blue Standard) in anticipation of the upcoming nationwide ban on single-use plastics.

Barbados implemented a nationwide ban on single-use plastics on April 1st, 2019. In response, Oceanic Global partnered with local sustainability consultant, Sustainable Caribbean to host a free industry-focused event on March 16th at Copacabana Beach Club, launching the Barbados Edition of The Oceanic Standard (TOS), now rebranded to the Blue Standard.

This cocktail event brought together specialists from the hospitality industry and solution-based vendors to showcase sustainable solutions available in Barbados. The goal of the TOS Barbados event was to ensure that, as the ban took effect, businesses were fully prepared for the transition. Attendees received vital information on sourcing sustainable products and avoiding ‘greenwashing’. A panel discussion featuring industry leaders and local experts emphasized the importance of this legislation in transforming the island’s hospitality sector. The event was attended by the Minister of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy, whose office introduced the bill.

Following the evening event, Sandals Barbados hosted a workshop demonstrating how they have applied the tools outlined in The Oceanic Standard (TOS) to eliminate single-use plastics. Executives, representatives and staff members from Sandals Barbados shared insights on how the all-inclusive resort is successfully making this transition.
